THE LINE

Line

Reducing the fully coloured, tonal, three dimensional world to a series of lines demands choice and thought. It is for this reason that line has often been seen as the superior form of drawing.
A line drawing should show precisely, and only, what is needed. Line drawing are the most immediate and direct of drawings.
A line drawing is versatil and can be used to suggest movement or scale. Line is used to analyse form.
Line drawing involves choice, choosing wich areas to include and wich to leave out. The artist is deciding how to reduce a world describe by gradations of light into areas surrounded and acted upon lines of varying thickness and speed.
Although a line drawing may be made for its own sake, many line drawings are made as part of a process, with artist using line for its inmmediacy in sketches and working notes. In many cultures, the line has been used as the main element in finished works.
